The Fan's Voice

We have earned the right, period.

So there I am, reading the sports page when I come across this gem in the AP:

Apparently, the MLB Players' Union is concerned about the lack of offers to free agent Barry Bonds. They have hinted that collusion may be at the root of the problem.

I don't know...maybe they're right.

I mean, what's not to love about a 43-year-old outfielder on bad knees who routinely turns singles into doubles?

What's not to love about an overweight left fielder who couldn't catch a bullet in Beirut?

Now that I think about it, the players' union must be right. Surely the owners and GMs of all 32 teams have circulated a memo saying something to the effect of "Ixnay on the Ondsbay."

Who wouldn't want a man fighting federal charges in their clubhouse?

Who wouldn't want a guy who refuses to stretch with the team influencing his younger players?

Why wouldn't any sane GM sign a known clubhouse cancer to some exorbitant contract, so that said cancer can continue his meaningless pursuit of personal goals, team be damned?

Who doesn't want Exhibit A of the Steroids Era in their lineup?

I'm thinking that Bonds would be Mr. Popularity in big league ballparks around the country.

People would certainly be vocal towards him. The first time he misplayed a routine fly ball because A) his broken knees wouldn't allow him to get a decent jump, and B) he's too busy thinking about his next at-bat, and C) to be honest, he could give a damn as long as the owner's check clears, I'm betting that the paying faithful will be in full voice.

They would probably say things that can't be printed in a public forum.

I don't know, but it seems to me that Bonds should be playing again for someone, anyone, after all the goodwill and friendship he's generated in baseball over the past twenty seasons.

I mean, he's got nowhere to go but forward from here, because he's burned every bridge that he's ever crossed.

Egad.

Totally Random Digression To End The Blog: Bonds and Roger Clemens should barnstorm together.
